Dublin… the competition of “The Castles”
20 08 2008Having lived in Edinburgh for a number of years and having visited it numerous times to see my sister and brother-in-law, there’s little wonder that Edinburgh Castle has a special place in my heart. It sits high above the common streets of Edinburgh, shining the majesty of her past brightly for all to see. It really is an amazing piece of architecture, which I hope will never disappear!
So… going to Dublin, I visited Dublin Castle to see what the resident medieval architecture had to offer in comparison to good ol’ Edinburgh. Well… I wasn’t all that impressed. Dublin Castle is modern, with a little touch of 1970’s office chique. I was a little disappointed to be honest… it wasn’t what I was expecting at all.
To show you just exactly what I mean… here’s a comparative view.

It’s fairly safe to say that for grandeur, Edinburgh wins hands down! Clearly the Irish missed a trick, but at least they can still justify a gift shop and a tour!

We Irish are justly proud of our castle…just because we don’t throw fireworks all over it and skate about it’s backside at xmas, doesn’t mean we don’t revere it’s history. We regard it with sophisticated pride…as did our ancestors. We treat it with dignity which is more than you Scottie dogs do with yours. Our castle is triumphant and makes us Irish filled with patriotic pride. So stick your Edinburgh castle up your kilt. x x x xx Mommy
